About Spero
Our goal is to raise awareness about the valuable services Spero provides and find ways to have a greater positive impact on the overall health and well-being of the community. “We all do better when we all do better,” says Michele Merxbauer, Executive Director of Spero.
At Spero, formerly SCHRC, we pride ourselves on fostering a workplace culture that empowers our team while transforming lives. For over six decades, our organization has been quietly revolutionizing mental health and social services in the region. Now, we’re stepping forward to share our values, goals, and the incredible stories of the individuals and teams that make it all possible.
What drives us?
Spero’s culture is rooted in its unwavering dedication to making a difference. For years, we focused inward—building robust services and strong partnerships with the county. Now, we’re looking outward, sharing our story and collaborating with local clinics, public health agencies, and community organizations to expand our reach and impact.
We believe in tapping into the immense talent within our team. By supporting career growth and encouraging bold, innovative programs, we empower our staff to lead initiatives that pioneer solutions to today’s challenges.
Impact beyond words
Our housing and homelessness initiatives are transforming lives, providing stable foundations for individuals and families. Programs like PATH, Mobile Crisis Response, and Substance Use Recovery ensure that our care extends beyond traditional models, addressing both immediate needs and long-term goals.
A vision for the future
At Spero, we don’t just see ourselves as a service provider—we’re an integral part of the community. As Michele, our Executive Director, explains:
"For a long time, we’ve been working quietly in our corner, providing solid and reliable mental health and substance use and recovery services. However, we know that to provide the best care possible, we need to treat the entire individual."
In 2021, we officially altered our method of providing services by becoming a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic, or a CCBHC. This allows us to treat the entire entire individual, rather than focus on one aspect of care. Within our clinic, we provide not only therapy and substance use recovery, but also nursing, psychiatry, case management, skills services, care coordination and mobile crisis services. We also collaborate closely with area hospitals, clinics, public health and other community-based human services to provide complete wrap-around care of the individual, ensuring that each need is provided directly or through a warm hand-off. The model of CCBHC maximizes the benefits of collaboration and thereby increases our total community impact by working together.
