A Residential Treatment Program for Adults with Mental Illness.
Intensive Residential Treatment Services (IRTS), provided at Safe Harbour in Owatonna, is designed to provide intensive support for individuals experiencing significant mental health challenges. Services are provided in a residential, community-based setting and aim to stabilize symptoms, develop skills, and transition individuals to a less restrictive environment or back to independent living.
Our facility offers both crisis stabilization and intensive residential treatment. With 24/7 support, personalized care plans, and a focus on holistic recovery, we address both mental health and co-occurring substance use issues.
About Safe Harbour
Safe Harbour is a one story building located in Owatonna, Minnesota. Constructed in 2012, our facility provides housing for up to 12 individuals at a time, including 10 Intensive Residential Treatment Services (IRTS) beds and 2 crisis beds. The crisis beds are available 24/7 and are designed for short-term stays of no longer than 10 days. Residents benefit from dual disorder programming, with both group and individual therapy tailored to their needs. To support overall well-being, the facility offers 16 hours of nursing services each week, catered meals, and access to computers and the internet. Each resident has their own private room and bathroom, ensuring comfort and privacy. While a typical IRTS stay is approximately 45 days, residents can remain in the program for up to 90 days as needed to achieve their recovery goals.

Who is Safe Harbour for?
Safe Harbor is an intensive residential treatment home for adults over the age of 18 who are experiencing a mental health emergency and for which a stay at Safe Harbour is considered medically necessary.
Safe Harbour will not accept individuals that: are under the age of 18, need skilled medical care, are physically unstable, intoxicated or under the influence, or anyone who cannot be safely managed in our setting. Examples include individuals that are currently physically aggressive, who are threatening, too manic to take redirection from staff, or that may be too impulsive and unpredictable to manage in our setting.
Referrals
Referrals to Safe Harbour come primarily from physicians, other mental
health professionals, Social Service agencies and other treatment programs. Specific admission criteria and application materials are available upon request. The referring agency is asked to provide background information to assist in the admission decision and in planning the resident’s treatment program. Prospective residents will be interviewed, in conference with a representative of the referring agency, prior to admission. A physical examination will be required prior to, or immediately following, admission.
Safe Harbour requires that adequate financial arrangements be made prior to admission. Fees are payable in advance except when authorization has been made by an approved agency.
